The Barto family grew up in Southern California in one of the world’s most competitive sailing environments. Captain Eric raced Hobie Cat’s on the lakes of the south west, including Lake Havasu, Lopez Lake near San Luis Obispo, and Vail Lake. Captain Eric also crewed numerous off-shore yacht races between the West Coast of the United States and Mexico. He qualified for the Olympics twice in Tornados at the age of 16. He is a master navigator who navigated several Transpac and Mexican races aboard several vessels, both catamaran and monohulls alike. His sailing adventures have taken him across the equator to the South Pacific, through the Panama Canal to the Caribbean, and across the United States to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, where he crewed with a team representing the Western Zone in the United States Yacht Racing Union National Competition.

Taking this love of sailing and racing into the waters off Maui allowed Eric the opportunity to develop Paragon Sailing Charters with his wife, Tamara. Together, Eric and Tamara developed four tours out of two harbors, with each tour focusing on their mutual love of the ocean and sailing. Even the company name, Paragon Sailing Charters, reflects their passion in creating the most personal, exclusive tours for the visitors to Maui. Their passion for customer service has been acknowledged by Five Diamond Resorts including the Four Seasons, Maui at Wailea; The Grand Wailea Resort & Spa; The Ritz-Carlton at Kapalua; and the Hyatt Regency Maui, to name just a few. Captain Greg Thomas, Master Seaman and Senior Captain at Paragon Sailing Charters, is a life member of the Paragon Sailing Charters Family! He has been sailing with Captain Eric & Tamara since 1979 and he was even an usher in their 1982 wedding! Captain Greg moved to Maui from Southern California in 1992, and was a part of the concept team that brought Paragon Sailing Charters to life. Besides his performance sailing with PARAGON II, he also has taken a keen interest in the incredible sport of windsurfing here on Maui.

Captain Greg has competed on the Professional Windsurfing Association world tour in the 2008 season. As the new “young gun” on the tour, he raced in Korea, New Zealand, Spain, Germany, and the Canary Islands. He is the United States National Champion in his age group and New Zealand National Champion as well. All of us at Paragon Sailing Charters are proud of Captain Greg, his passion for sailing, both big cats and windsurfers alike.
